    Job Description for First Hand

     

    Reports To:  Costume Shop Manager             

    Area of Responsibility:  Artistic

    Wage Classification:  Exempt

     

    Position Summary:  The First Hand’s main focus is to assist the Costume Shop Manager in the, creation and execution of all costumes for all Company, NB2 and School of Nashville Ballet productions including, but not limited to, financial management, management of cutters and stitchers, logistical coordination, and serving as liaison to the artistic staff and dancers.  The First Hand is expected to be able to function autonomously and effectively manage the day-to-day operations of the Costume Shop in the absence of the Costume Shop Manager.

     

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

     
    • It is understood that the goal of the First Hand shall be to help create and maintain the “vision” of the Artistic Director, choreographer and designers while providing a safe working environment for the dancers and crew.

    • Assist the Costume Shop Manager in the preparation and maintenance of all paperwork with regards to the costume shop:  inventories, costume plots, accessory lists, etc.; or assisting guest designers as needed with paperwork for archival purposes. 

    • Assist in the management of the run crew for all performances, and make repairs and alterations during rehearsals and performances as necessary. 

    • Work with the Costume Shop Manager in supervising staff and creating work assignments for costume shop personnel, backstage dressers and costume.

    • Maintain the Costume Shop and Costume Storage in a clean, safe and organized state, which includes incidental equipment maintenance.

    • Assist in the management of all incoming and outgoing rentals of costumes. 

    • Ordering of supplies, materials and notions in a timely manner to keep the costume shop operating efficiently.


    General Responsibilities:

     
    • Assisting dancers with costume needs

    • Maintenance of costume shop equipment

    • Assisting with advancing, set-up and strike, and overseeing the execution and needs of Lecture/Demonstrations and other special appearances by the Company as assigned by the Production Stage Manager or Director of Artistic Operations.

    Work Requirements and Qualifications

     
    1. Education: BA in theater or similar arts education or considered to be an expert in this field.

     
    1. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of the costume construction, fitting and alterations. Skilled stitching ability. Skilled patterning ability. Able to work efficiently and effectively with others. Able to direct costume shop personnel, backstage dressers and costume assistants and communicate effectively the requirements of each production. Basic working knowledge or various sewing machine, sergers and other tools of the trade.  Basic dyeing.

     
    1. Experience: minimum of 3 years in a theatrical field

     
    1. Equipment: Knowledge of various sewing machine and tools used in a costume shop and the safe use of each. Basic knowledge of general office equipment.
